Honeybees pollinate about a third of our food.
But did you know they don’t pollinate tomatoes?
Tomatoes must be pollinated by bumblebees through a fascinating process honeybees don’t use called sonication, or buzz pollination.
Unlike most flowers, pollen on tomato flowers is not in the exterior of the anthers, but is rather produced internally and then released through pores in the anther.
Motion is required to release the tightly-held pollen, and the greatest quantity can be released only by bumblebees.
Bumblebees land on tomato blossoms, pull the flowers down into a vertical position, put their bellies against the stigma, and then vibrate their wing muscles and hang on. Their vibrations create a buzz at roughly the same frequency as the middle C musical note, which is the resonant frequency of tomato blossoms.
The pollen released by the resonant buzzing then falls by gravity directly to the bee’s fuzzy belly, which is rubbing against the stigma. The tomato, which is self-fertile, has now been pollinated.
You are like the relationship between bumblebees and tomatoes: You were born with music in you, a song only you can sing — a unique buzz at an unrepeatable, un-duplicable frequency. There are problems that can only be solved, suffering that can only be alleviated, beauty that can only be created by your buzz and your buzz alone.
Your buzz is the unique combination of your gifts, talents, knowledge, values, passions, values, insights, ideas, interests, preferences, experience, and perspective packaged in a way that creates the greatest value for others.
Your buzz is what Julia Cameron calls your vein of gold:
“A person can have many talents and gifts and do many things exceptionally well, but your vein of gold, ah…that is the thing you do superbly.”
The problems and pain you notice in the world are the flowers with which your buzz has a resonant frequency.
If you don’t create your buzz and use it to its full potential, those problems remain unsolved, that pain remains unalleviated.
When you buzz at the right frequency, in the right way, for the right problems, magic, like pollen, is unleashed in the world. Breathtaking flowers bloom in barren deserts. Nourishing food for the soul is produced. Life is made rich, wondrous, and beautiful.
Without bumblebees, we would have no tomatoes. Without you, we would have no ____________.
Fill in that blank and you will have found your God-given purpose, and the world will never be the same.
Oliver Wendell Holmes said,
“Many people die with their music still in them. Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it time runs out.”
But the real tragedy is not for those who die without having played their music — it’s for the other people whose pollen would have been unleashed had that music been played.
If you don’t create your buzz and buzz it loud and proud, you’ll never be fulfilled. But more importantly, the people you were born to serve will never be pollinated and will never reach their full potential.
The world desperately needs you to create your buzz and find your flowers.
Don’t try to copy anyone else’s buzz — dare to stand out.
“If a man does not keep pace with his companions,” wrote Henry David Thoreau, “perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”
The purer and more authentic your buzz, the more life, beauty, joy, and fulfillment you create.
It’s time to get your buzz on.
